is when untreated wastewater is released causing pollution of waterways, basements and communities. Cased by heavy, intense or prolonged rainfall, excess wet weather flow has to be diverted to avoid upstream flooding. In doing this, untreated water is discharged into the environment, causing adverse human health, environmental and aesthetic impacts.
CSOs can be a major source of water pollution in communities served by Combined Sewer Systems. These systems serve over 43 million people in approximately 1,100 communities nationwide.
CSO monitoring is complicated by tidal or receiving water intrusion, as well as overflow events. These create hydraulic complexities that require experience to set up an effective monitoring plan. The entire flow of the containment system is greatly affected by flow and can require particularly in the case of a containment systems that are under considerable stress, the need to determine flow. Level Monitoring is the process of determining flow patterns based on the level of water within the system. Large influxes after rainfall events can point to I&I, while consistently producing an altered flow can be a sign of root infiltration or cracks in the pipe. All leading to water being where it should not – inside the containment system.

The ADS RainAlert III is a cost-effective, wireless rain gauge that alerts operators digitally when rainfall intensity exceeds a critical threshold. Priced for deployment as a stand-alone unit or part of a comprehensive monitoring network, the enclosure is suitable for ground-level, pole-mount or rooftop installation. The RainAlert III connects to virtually any tipping bucket. Rainfall totals are time stamped and stored at one-minute intervals or greater based on customer supplied specifications.
